Before the independence of India, he became Bombay' s Home Minister and later was elected as Chief Minister of Bombay State in 1952. The state was a bi- lingual state, home to Gujarati- speaking and Marathi- speaking people.
Since 1956, activist organization Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti led a movement for a Marathi- only speaking state of Maharashtra.
Often called Acharya ( Sanskrit for teacher), he is best known for the Bhoodan Movement. He is considered as a National Teacher of India and the spiritual successor of Mohandas Gandhi.
